Lip Cosmetic Tattoo FAQ

What is Lip Blush?

Lip Blush is the implantation of pigment into the epidermal/dermal layer of skin. This service is the ideal procedure to enhance the natural beauty of the lips. Just like brows, every artist has their own style. Here at Mikaila Keana Cosmetic Tattoo, we aim to provide a natural, subtle enhancement to the lips. This will not replace your lipstick. Think of a beautiful tinted chapstick, that helps even out your lip tone and defines lost definition at the natural border of your lips. Depending on how your skin receives the pigment and the pigment used, results can last anywhere from 18 months-3 years.

Does it hurt?

Each person has a different pain tolerance, but generally, it is mild/moderate and very bearable! In most cases, a topical anesthetic is used throughout the procedure.  For women, we recommend booking an appointment while NOT on your menstrual cycle. It will help with pain and excessive bleeding of the lips

How many Lip cosmetic tattoo sessions will I need?

Everyone is different! On average, 2 sessions. An initial session and a touch-up 6-12 weeks from the first appointment. Due to the uniqueness of each individual and the superficial nature of the tattoo itself additional sessions could be needed. Touch-ups provide an opportunity to assess how your skin responds to the procedure and are an opportunity to make any adjustments necessary while also lengthening longevity. Touch-up sessions are not included in the initial price.

Long-term, maintenance touch-ups will be needed every 18-36 months on average to maintain shape and color.

What is Lip Neutralization?

Dark lip neutralization is just another name for a cosmetic tattoo treatment that is utilized for clients whose natural base undertone (the natural color on their lips) is cool or dark. Simply adding the desired “target” color on top of those tones would have undesirable results. The cool/dark undertones must be first transformed to a neutral tone prior to enhancing the color to the desired result. The number of sessions can vary from 2-4 to achieve the desired result.

Can you make my lips look bigger?

As far as shape, we can not and will not go beyond the vermillion border of your lips. Yes, makeup can achieve that but you CAN NOT do that with Lip Blush. The skin on your face and the skin on your lips is completely different and if you go beyond the vermilion border, the pigment will be brighter and bolder, creating a lip liner look. So your lips will look fuller and more defined because most of us lack definition at our true vermillion border, but this is not a procedure to make your lips larger. We highly recommend looking into lip filler if that is what you a trying to achieve! Lips with filler are actually better for Lip Blush, as filler plumps and hydrates our lips, and smooths out the surface! But in turn, highly overfilled lips can make Lip Blush more difficult! It is all about balance and setting realistic expectations which we will ALWAYS do

Who is not a candidate for Lip Blush?

Certain skin conditions in the lip area, medications, and skin types may prohibit you from being a candidate for Lip Blush. Also includes, but it not limited to:

-Cracked, dry lips
-Smokers
-Those with deep wrinkles through lips
-Intense sun-damaged lips
-Thin skin
-Highly hyper/hypopigmented lips
-If you do have very thin lips, it may be advised you to look into lip filler first as it will only benefit you and allow the lip blush to be visible!

Please contact us if you have any questions about being a candidate in general! Things like pregnancy, breastfeeding, temporary use of a skin product, sunburns, etc. may temporarily prohibit getting the service done! Please visit the pre-care instructions for more information on how to prepare for an appointment!

Will it look like lipstick?

Although there are techniques for a “Lipstick Effect”, we aim for a more natural result. We will work with each client’s goals and can provide a more sheer look to even out your natural lip tone, to a slightly more defined lip stain look.

How do you choose a pigment color?

As far as pigment choice, we do HIGHLY recommend bringing in a shade that you enjoy wearing! Pigment choice is a blend of artist and client collaboration. It is key to understand we are tattooing under the surface of your skin whereas makeup sits on top, so a large component is the warm or cool undertones of your natural lip. So for example, we can not tattoo a cool tone over already cool-toned lips. The result would be OVERLY cool-toned lips and will not do well long-term as It fades. So we want to see the shades you enjoy wearing, but we will always ensure whatever shade chosen is a suitable choice! We also believe that some of the best results are from your natural lip tones! By enhancing the most vibrant part of your lips and evening that out, it can deliver the most natural, blush of color! Overall, we love a natural enhancement that will age and fade well with every client.

Eyebrow Cosmetic Tattoo FAQ

What is Microblading and who is it best for?

Microblading is a cosmetic tattoo procedure in which a small hand tool and a blade, comprised of a number of needles, are used to create small cuts in the skin to mimic the look of hair. Microblading can last anywhere from 1-5+ years depending on the pigments used, skin type, and lifestyle.

Microblading is truly only a fit for about 5% of clients! Those with Youthful, healthy skin, little to no pores, fine brow hair throughout the majority of the brow, and normal to dry skin. This technique also has a shelf life! No matter the skin type, Microbladed strokes start to expand over time and no longer resemble the once crisp/fine “hair-like” stroke in the skin. Also, think about it, we can not keep cutting open the same cuts year after year with touch-ups. It will cause scar tissue! We are very particular about who we microblade, in order to give good both short and long-term results!

Does it hurt?

Generally, no. Each person has a different pain tolerance, but consistent application of a topical anesthetic is applied throughout the duration. Most clients are very comfortable, but if you do not respond well to the topical anesthetic, there may be discomfort.

Who is not suitable for eyebrow cosmetic tattoos?

Certain skin conditions in the brow area, medications, and skin types may prohibit you from being a candidate for any eyebrow service. Please contact us if you have any questions about being a candidate in general! Things like pregnancy, breastfeeding, temporary use of a skin product, sunburns, etc. may temporarily prohibit getting the service done! Please visit the pre-care instructions for more information on how to prepare for an appointment!

What are powder brows and who are they best for?

Powder brows have many names! Machine brows, shading, form of ombre brows, just to name a few! Regardless of the term, it is a cosmetic tattoo treatment for the enhancement of your brows to create a fuller appearance. Powder brows can range from a soft dust of color, to defined but natural, to a more intense healed result, depending on your goals! Results can last anywhere from 2-5+ years depending on the pigments used, technique, skin type, lifestyle, and upkeep.

Powder brows are great for all skin types, most ages, and brows! In our opinion, it can be the most natural option, is the most predictable and best looking long term, and above all, less traumatic for our skin!

Will it replace my brow make up?

No! There is a huge difference between cosmetic tattoos and makeup. Makeup sits on top of the skin and underneath the hair. It is buildable and can create texture and density. Cosmetic tattoos sit underneath the hair and skin. Our skin will always act as a “filter” and make it appear softer. Also, over-saturating brow cosmetic tattoos, in order to attempt to replace makeup, lead to poor long-term results. Cosmetic Tattoos are meant to make your life easier, but not meant to replace a makeup routine! There are certain things that should be left up to makeup and certain things that cosmetic tattooing can achieve.

I have previous work done by another artist, can I book an appointment?

We do not offer touch ups on other artists work. In order for us to properly and successfully  cover old eyebrow pmu (permanent make up), it must be significantly faded (80-90%). Working over previous work can be tricky and all depends on its current state, and health of your skin. All cover ups must be pre-approved before booking. Please email photos in natural lighting, with no make up on the brows.

There are NO exceptions to this rule! If you do have an outbreak, it will usually occur on the third (3rd) day following your appointment. This rule holds true for each and every time you have any amount of lip blush done. You will need to call your physician in order to obtain your prescription strength anti-viral medication.

Taking preventative medication is a MUST the day before, day of and the day after (and possibly longer) after your appointment as a potential outbreak can occur as the skin’s natural reaction to the procedure. If you experience frequent outbreaks, please note that Lip Blush can only be done after 4 weeks from your most recent outbreak. All other questions or concerns regarding medications and outbreaks should be discussed with your healthcare physician. If you haven’t had a cold sore/fever blister/herpes it is still HIGHLY recommended to take Lysine pre/post appointment as you can still unknowingly carry the herpes virus and not have an outbreak yet.

-For 7 days, reapply a thin layer of balm multiple times a day. Keep the skin moist at all times.
-Drink all liquids through a straw for 7 days.
-Apply a thicker layer of ointment before bathing and brushing your teeth. Avoid toothpaste getting on the lips.
-Do your best to not get the area wet besides cleaning them until day 7.
-Do not touch, bite, lick, peel, rub, or tamper with the treated area.
-Do not let any water, lotion, make up, foreign substances touch the area for 7 days.
-Do not use a vape or smoke for 7 days. This is important! The heat will cause discoloration!
-No excessive sweating for 7 days
-No spicy, salty, citrusy foods for 7 days
-Do not eat any foods that will cause over stretching of your mouth. It will cause the lips to crack.
-Not sauna, steam room, submerging in swimming pool for 14 days
-Absolutely no Neosporin or vaseline on them while healing.
-Avoid prolonged sun exposure for 30 days as the skin is still healing until the skin cycle is complete.

What to Expect

Day 1: Right after the procedure the lips will be bold, vibrant and feel swollen and tight.
Day 2: The lips are much darker and still feel swollen & dry, but there is no pain.
Day 3-4: The skin is dry, flaking and peeling. The color is uneven and the outline is often darker than the inside area.
Day 5-6: The flaking is almost gone, but the color is still uneven. Lips can still feel very dry.
Day 7-31: The lips have completely healed, but the color is much lighter and softer.
After 4-6 weeks: The color has fully bloomed and settled.

At 6 weeks, your lips will be fully healed. Whatever pigment that does not return will be addressed at your touch up appointment. At this appointment, we will asses your retention, touch up spots that didn’t stick, and adjust the pigment color if needed! Once the lips have healed from your first touch up appointment, it is recommended that you do not return for your yearly color boost for 18-36 months!

Eyebrow Aftercare

– Day 1, rinse area with cool water and pat dry when you get home and before bed. -Starting on day 2, cleanse morning and night for 10 days with the provided cleanser.
– Apply rice-sized amount of balm to the brows 2-3x a day for 10 days with a q-tip. The brows should be lightly coated, not goopy.
– Avoid getting your new brows wet, besides washing off the cleanser, until ALL flaking has stopped (usually 10 days). This means keeping them dry in the shower (no steamy ones for a few days either!), no sweating in the brow area, no steam rooms, swimming, etc.
– Save extra cleanser and balm for your touch up appt, you should have enough for both!
– You may wear makeup around the brows, but nothing directly over or around them for 2 weeks.
– Avoid direct sun exposure for 2 weeks. If extended sun exposure is happening, you must wear a large hat to protect the brows as they heal. After the 2 weeks, you MUST apply sunscreen to your brows indefinitely when out in the sun, this is imperative to ideal long term results.
– Do not touch, pick, rub, or scratch the brows. Do not pick the scabs or flakes as they come off, this will remove the pigment and lead to patchiness. Let it happen and trust the process!
– No anti-aging or acne products on the brows ever. (Anything with Retinol, Glycolic Acid, Salicylic Acid, etc.)

What to expect

Immediately after your appointment, you may experience minor redness or swelling around the treated area, which typically goes away within 24 hours. Over the next few hours, the pigment in the skin will oxidize making the brows look darker and warmer (red) than they were initially. This is normal and expected. Pigment typically fades anywhere from 20%-60% once fully healed.

Around day 3-4, you may notice light flaking on the treated area. This is normal! Please refrain from picking at the brows. Doing so will result in loss of pigment in those areas and can cause scarring. Brows may appear spotty or patchy until the entire brow has finished healing. Once all flaking is complete (usually around day 10), the brows will appear much lighter. The pigment will darken over the next 4-6 weeks and the pigment will return to the surface of the skin with the healed color.

At 6 weeks, your brows will be fully healed. Whatever pigment that does not return will be addressed at your touch up appointment. At this appointment, we will asses your retention, touch up spots that didn’t stick, and adjust the pigment color if needed! Once the brows have healed from your first touch up appointment, it is recommended that you do not return for your yearly color boost for 18-36 months!

Once the brows have healed from your first touch up appointment, it is recommended that you do not return for your yearly color boost for 18-36 months!

policies and values

Deposits

We take a small deposit for all of our appointments due to high demand and respect for our time.

A $100 deposit is required to book an initial appointment as a new client. All deposits are NON-REFUNDABLE and NON-TRANSFERABLE to a future appointment. A deposit is to ensure that you are serious about booking your appointment. If you would like to reschedule or cancel your appointment, you can do so online on Square appointments, where you will request/schedule all your appointments with us!

We understand that life happens, so a deposit can be transferred ONE time if rescheduling/canceling BEFORE the 72 hr period prior to the scheduled appointment.

DEPOSITS ARE NON-REFUNDABLE

Options for rescheduling times are subject to the availability of the artist. For the sake of burnout, our mental health, and life outside of the studio, we do not “squeeze in”. The availability we have on our online calendar is our only availability!

Realistic Expectations

We pride ourselves on being honest, and 100% transparent at Mikaila Keana Cosmetic Tattoo. We will always set realistic expectations from the beginning. We believe in educating our clients and being transparent every step of the way. The permanent makeup industry has created bad habits in artists and clients, and we strive to be the change this industry needs as far as realistic expectations and putting the needs of clients and their skin FIRST. If we do not believe that we can meet your expectations, we will always choose parting ways with integrity and a clear conscience, rather than choosing money for a result that is not realistic, safe or ideal for your skin, short and long-term. We’ve got you and will always have the best options for you in mind!!

Rescheduling

If you wish to reschedule, a minimum of 72 hours' notice is needed. Deposits can be transferred ONE time if the reschedule occurs before the 72 hr notice prior to the scheduled appointment. All appointments rescheduled under 72hrs will require a new deposit to book another appointment. Again, You are allowed one reschedule per deposit if OVER 72 hrs from the scheduled appointment.

Payment Methods

Cash is currently the ONLY payment method accepted in the studio. Deposits are paid with all major credit/debit cards via an invoice that is emailed to you once an appointment has been requested on the schedule. No payments are taken at the time of scheduling! You will put a card on file in order to schedule an appointment for no-show protection.

Results

Healed results will vary with each individual client. We have no control over what occurs during the healing process or how your skin reacts to being worked on. A minimum of two sessions is strongly recommended and in some cases, additional touch-ups may be required. Cosmetic Tattooing procedures are not intended to replace the use of makeup products, but to enhance your individual features and make your routines a bit easier!

All risks and uncertainty of the process involved in cosmetic tattooing are agreed upon and understood by the client before booking an appointment.

At the time of your appointment, if it is clear that this concept is not understood by the client and there is uncertainty or a sense that this is an impulsive decision, we reserve the right to refuse the service and the deposit will be forfeited.

Cover-ups, previous cosmetic tattoo

If you have previous eyebrow or lip work done, you MUST email over clear photos with no makeup on the area, in well-lit, natural lighting, BEFORE requesting/scheduling an appointment. If the work is too dark, saturated, scarred, discolored, or misshaped, tattoo removal may be recommended before we begin a cover-up or rework.

PRE APPROVAL IS REQUIRED
